(June 24, 2025) Senator Mike Lee (R-Utah), chair of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, has proposed selling 2.2 to 3.3 million acres of federal lands, including U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management holdings, as part of President Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill.” The proposal targets lands in 11 Western states to address housing shortages by enabling development. The Wilderness Society estimates over 250 million acres may be eligible, raising concerns about lost public access for hiking, hunting, and fishing. The proposal excludes national parks and monuments.
